COMA Counselling and CARE

Education
ComaCARE is a Health and Human Rights NGO which works with comatose and brain injured patients In South Africa. The patients are mainly young men who are injured through violence and road traffic accidents. COUNSELLING
We have a specific approach to working at the bedside of coma patients; looking for tiny signs which may be the start of non verbal communication; assisting the family to understand how important their presence is, counseling the family through the trauma. We also assist the family and patient to adjust to the long rehabilitation process. This service is conducted through specially trained patient advocates.
ADVOCACY
We support families to ask for improved levels of health and social service provision for brain injured patients. We run an easy access outpatients clinic where a multidisciplinary team assess the patient, the family member receives counseling and an on-site grants officer speeds the disability grant process
RESEARCH
We conduct research into the best practice for the care of coma patients and use this in our training and information packs.
EDUCATION
We train nurses to be more compassionate to head injury patients, understanding the patient's limitations after a head injury. We are also helping to develop the first postgraduate course in Africa for neuroscience nursing.
We also conduct 6 workshops for volunteers and have a website www.comacare.com which educates people about coma and brain injury. More recently we have been involved with young men's groups in the township raising the issue of head injury awareness and the risk factors for young men.
ComaCARE is supported through donations and sales of our leaflets and training programmes. If you wish to support our work please write to us at admin@comacare.com
